A Cleaner World Begins on Your Devices: The Alexela Latvija Team Takes Part in a Digital Cleanup
20. January 2026
January is celebrated worldwide as Digital Cleanup Month. We, the Alexela Latvija team, are also starting the year with fresh energy - reviewing our digital resources and clearing out the clutter from our smart devices and digital storage. Our goal is to make room for all the meaningful work and plans we have envisioned for this year.
This is a simple way to free your devices from unnecessary information, reduce energy consumption, and contribute to a cleaner digital environment. Smaller data volumes mean a smaller environmental impact!
The Vital Role of Digital Cleanup in Resource Efficiency
You might wonder - what does a deleted email have to do with saving natural resources? The connection is more direct than we think.
- Data Centers and Drinking Water Resources. All our digital content is physically stored in massive data centers that generate immense heat. To keep these servers from overheating, many data centers worldwide consume millions of liters of clean water every day. Less unnecessary data in cloud storage means less cooling power required and a direct saving of drinking water resources on a global scale.
- Reduce Excess Data and Save. For example, a household of two using 1 TB of data storage consumes approximately 100 kWh per year - which can account for up to 5% of their typical annual electricity consumption. By clearing out unnecessary data, we don’t just organize our digital environment; we also relieve pressure on energy resources, allowing them to be redirected toward more productive uses for society.
- The Digital Environment’s Impact on the Ecosystem. Every redundant unit of information increases the total load on the planet's resources. Currently, the digital world generates a significant portion of the global ecological footprint, comparable to the aviation industry. By reducing our personal digital "baggage," we help lower overall environmental pollution and the strain on resources needed to maintain and cool technology.
- Device Longevity. By freeing up memory on your phone or computer, the device operates more efficiently and lasts longer. This delays the moment the device becomes waste and reduces the need to extract new raw materials from the earth for manufacturing new hardware.
Join the Alexela Team's Digital Cleanup!
We invite you - our customers and friends - to spend just ten minutes organizing your digital environment. This isn’t just about order; it’s about conscious resource consumption.
How can you contribute?
- Clean out your email. Open your inbox and search for "Unsubscribe." Opt out of all mailings you never read. Sort your emails by size and delete the "heaviest" ones.
- Perform WhatsApp audit. We are all in groups where funny videos and images are shared. These take up massive space! Delete them and clear out old chat histories.
- Perform cloud storage audit. Review your Google Drive, OneDrive, or iCloud. Do you really need five similar photos of a dinner from 2019?
- Review your apps. Delete apps you haven't opened in the last six months.
- Give devices a second life. Old phones, tangled cables, or worn-out computers contain valuable metals that can be reused. In Latvia, you can easily find the nearest point to safely drop off old equipment for recycling at: www.atkritumi.lv
Small Steps Toward Big Change
The goal of the Alexela Group has always been to offer sustainable solutions. Digital cleanup is one of the simplest ways each of us can reduce our environmental impact without leaving home.
Let’s be knowledgeable and responsible - not only in our actions on the road or at home but also on our screens!
